Immune Boosting Tea- You and the Kids Will Love
My poor, poor children live in a water only household. I know. Whao is them, right?! We sometimes have a bit of coconut milk, orange juice or tea. But mostly, it's water. So when I introduced a PINK iced tea to my 3.5 and 1 year old they just about exploded with excitement! Mildly sweet, tart, fragrant, cold and PINK - LOOK OUT! They both CHUG this stuff, my 1 year old especially! Which is great because it's GREAT for them!

What prompted this PINK endeavor was the fact that I have a bag of organic hibiscus powder that has been sitting in my cupboard for far longer than I am willing to admit. I had no idea what to do with it. I won it, actually! It was some sort of Facebook thing I won through Mountain Rose Herbs. I was gifted all the ingredients to make home made play dough. The PINK Hibiscus powder was used to make....you guessed it, PINK play-dough. I did make play-dough, once...

So I looked up some things to do with this PINK powder and learned the amazing benefits of Hibiscus Tea. It took me a few tries to perfect a recipe. And still, I feel like we've hardly scratched the surface! I can see how a variety of flavors and mixtures could pair well with hibiscus.
The first time I made it with just the powder and water. I did not strain it. I served it hot. It was not a hit. But, I had the flavor captured. I could immediately see this needs to be served as a cold tea and it needs some help to broaden and brighten the flavor! Most recipes you'll see will add sugar and while that would be yummy it certainly isn't healthy, nor is it a necessity to create a tasty treat your whole fam will enjoy!

To me, using powder to make tea is not ideal. And this particular powder requires straining multiple times. The powder is more ideal for culinary and cosmetic use, think tinted lip balm! It can also be used as a natural fabric dye soooooo I usually just take my kids shirts off when I give them this tasty treat!
If you haven't yet experienced the witchy, earthy vibes of Mountain Rose Herbs you better get over there because it is pretty inspiring. We are lucky to have a world renowned leader in organic, ethically sourced herbs right here in our own back yard! Once I finish off my powder I will definitely be heading over to purchase a loose leaf hibiscus. They also have yummy loose leaf hibiscus blends you can purchase in addition to a whole flower option. You can get all your tea making accessories there as well! Plus, essential oils, amazing books, cooking spices and herbs, and everything you could possibly need for your home made beauty and skin care products. It's a fabulous store with an inspiring ethos plus, super knowledgeable and helpful staff.

Immune Boosting Hibiscus Tea -
Much of this is variable and should really be played with per your own taste but here's what I've landed on. Bring the tea to a boil and then simmer. I let mine simmer for about a half an hour or so. It will reduce a bit, that's okay.
OR Organic Hibiscus Loose Leaf - Recommendations vary but 1/4 cup tea to 4 cups water seems average.
Organic Cloves - 4 (I buy them in the bulk section of Mountain Rose)
Organic Ginger Root - About an inch. Skinned and cut .
Organic Orange - Juice of one whole orange plus, throw a couple rinds in.
A Jug and A Half of Water - So like 12 cups. This makes enough tea for everyone to have a glass and fill my 64 ounce jug for later.

Tools To Make Your Tea:
Stainless Steel Pot - I have the 10 piece set by Tramontina. It's a pretty low end price point for stainless steel. OOOhhh how I'd love a Caraway set!!! I've heard great things about their products. Maybe Santa will be bring this set one day!!!
Tight Mesh Strainer - If you are using powder you will need to strain your tea a few times.
Tight Mesh Tea Ball - I have this one from Mountain Rose Herbs but it's not tight enough. I want this one!

Hibiscus is not recommended for use during pregnancy. However, it is traditionally used as a women's health remedy. Supposedly, great to ease premenstrual symptoms and enhance mood as well as offering support during menstruation.
Let me know in the comments if you try this recipe! Do your littles chug it down like mine? Find this article helpful, informative, inspiring? Give it a 💗 would ya!? I am glad you're here.
Let's do this thing together. 💚
